Make the Most Out of a Consultation

Posted by Dominick R. Dolci | Oct 06, 2014 | 0 Comments

Maybe you have never had a consultation before. Don't be nervous. After all, the consultation is a great opportunity to get to know the law firm and feel comfortable moving forward. Here are a few ideas as to how to prepare for and make the most out of a consultation:

Documentation: Be sure to bring a copy of all and any paperwork or documents you have regarding your case. (If you don't have any, that's ok. The point of the consult is simply to get started. An attorney can guide you as to the documentation you may need for your case moving forward.

Outline: You may also want to bring an outline of your legal problem. While you may already have in mind what you want to say, having an outline you can leave behind with the attorney can save time and keep things clear.

Paper & pen: It may be hard to remember every detail you discuss during your consult. Bring paper and something to write with in order to take notes.

Honesty: It is very important to be honest with the lawyer that you are referred to. Truthful accounts can make a difference in how your lawyer proceeds with your case. Also, all information is disclosed.

Ask about cost: Your lawyer should be prepared to discuss fees. You may consider asking about payment plans and what happens should you win or lose your case.

Ask questions: It's important to both you and your lawyer that you understand your case. Be sure to add any questions you may have on your outline.

Read, file, and listen: Be sure to read all documents before signing to be sure you know exactly what it is you are being asked to sign. You may also want to file your own records of fee agreements or get copies of documents prepared on your case. Finally, listen to your lawyer whether or not you agree with the advice given. The lawyer's judgments are based on legal training and experience and give advice with your best interests in mind.
